Helen Keller had said, “The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched they must be felt with the heart.” If there was an example which could be given to substantiate this quote it would be Collected Stories by Anita Desai. It is something on which anything written or said will not suffice; it is an experience which one must get only by reading it.

Buried resentments, un-expected disappointments, new friendships, small acts of cruelty, journeys that take you back to where you started. With trademark compassion and tender irony, Anita Desai’s short stories give us familiar worlds made unfamiliar to wonderful effect.

About the author

Anita Desai as an author needs no introduction on my blog. Read my previous reviews on her HERE to know more.

Me thinks

I select books on the basis of their blurbs and needless to say the blurb mentioned about intrigued me to read this book. I have already read and reviewed The Artist of Disappearance by the author before and hence I had certain expectations from the author while reading this one too. Luckily for me, the author did not disappoint.

In Collected Stories the author has shared 21 heart touching stories which touch a very deep chord with you. These stories display a gamut of emotions which otherwise could easily remain unnoticed. Very rarely do we come across a collection like this which is eloquent and at the same time is soul stirring.

I usually am a very fact paced reader but for this particular one I had slowed down for reasons unknown. After reading each story my would automatically embark on a journey of its own where it did some self introspection for a while before coming back to the book in time to begin the next story. I know I have said this before in another review too and at the cost of sounding repetitive I would say if there is one word that can describe Anita Desai’s style of writing it would be “haunting”. Her writing leaves an ever lasting impression on the reader’s heart, mind and soul making the familiar unfamiliar as mentioned in the blurb.

Through some very common characters easily believable and existent around us she manages to weave an intricate web of emotions in the most profound manner. A word of caution I would like to give here is, it is not like any usual fast paced short stories collection. It is something which needs to be devoured bit by bit and let its beauty sink in deeply for you to enjoy it completely.

This book is a perfect companion for a chilly, breezy day to be spent in its company along with hot chocolate!
